Sea of Spins Review
Evoplay has put on their creative hats for this one, but unfortunately a good idea and concept has been lost in the execution. The 90s style computer game visuals do not evoke feelings of nostalgia at all. Instead, the game comes across as half-finished and lacking in more than one department. If you are going to do a 3D animated pirate game, then for god’s sake do it properly with modern up-to-date graphics and some bloody charm.
The characters seem so stiff and lifeless in Sea of Spins that you wonder if they have become self-aware of the fact that they are forever doomed to exist frozen in a mediocre video slot that pretty soon will sink into oblivion. The math model is totally mediocre too, at least on paper, but we learned a thing or two about the true nature of this game from our 200 spins test run (which actually turned into 400 spins), and you should definitely check out what we have to say about it further down in the review.
The game plays out on the open seas with a shark circling the reels, and the symbols disappear into the ocean on every spin, only to re-emerge in a new configuration. The pirate ship in the background is populated by a female captain and her parrot, other than that there is nobody in sight. 1 of 3 enemy vessels (including a ghost ship with an undead captain) will come along once in a while and give you a corresponding bonus feature. You’ll see these ships again in the bonus round, where you get to take turns battling each of the 3 captains in the hope of winning a 3x multiplier.

What are the bonus features?
The golden skull is the wild symbol in Sea of Spins slot, and it will step in for all regular symbols to help you form winning combos. You can also land winning combos with the wild symbol alone, and it pays the same as the highest paying symbol in the game.
You have 3 random features that can trigger on any given non-winning spin. Morgan the Undead (captain of the ghost pirate ship) will replace up to 4 randomly chosen symbols with wilds, while Samuel Soaring (captain of the steampunk airship) will replace all barrel symbols with wilds. The last random feature comes from John Sticky (captain of the Imperial ship), and it can only be triggered if you have a losing spin with wilds present on the reels. The wild symbols will then become sticky, and the reels will respin to give you a second chance to land a winner.
Free spins in Sea of SpinsThe pirate skull with eye-patch and a red bandana is the scatter symbol in this game, and it can only land on reels 1, 3 and 5.
You need to land 3 scatters on the same spin to trigger the Battle Free Spins feature, and there are 3 different bonus rounds in Sea of Spins slot. Which ship you battle first is chosen randomly, and each ship comes with corresponding reel modifiers. The extras each of the free spins modes has to offer is similar to the random base game features, and each of the characters have their own unique ship you need to conquer. If you’re battling Morgan the Undead, you’ll get up to 4 random wilds after each spin, while a fight against Samuel Soaring turns all barrel symbols into wilds after each spin. You can also fight against the imperial vessel, and this means that all wilds become sticky for the duration of the feature.
Your pirate ship and the enemy ship gets 7 health points each, and a sea battle ensues as the free spins play out. The bonus round will go on as long as it takes for one ship to be defeated, and you need to land scatters to damage the enemy vessel. If you don’t land scatters your own ship takes the damage, and each round decreases the health points by 1 for one of the ships.
If you manage to beat the enemy ship, you will get to choose between 3 treasure chests. The chests will either contain a multiplier of 2x or 3x, or you can trigger another bonus round with a different enemy. It’s possible to defeat all 3 enemies in a row this way, and then the chests will contain only multipliers.
The multiplier of either 2x or 3x will then be applied to your total free spin winnings, which can lead to some pretty decent payouts. How to play
The symbols are submerged into the ocean as you spin the reels, and a new set of symbols will surface. The actual gameplay itself is not that different from other slots out there however, even though the Battle Bonus Round makes the game stand out. We will walk you through all essentials here, as the game’s interface is somewhat unusual also.
The “i” icon down in the left-hand side corner takes you into the paytable. Here you can check out all the different symbol values, and read up on the bonus features and special symbols Sea of Spins has to offer. You can also check out the game rules, which formally describes just about everything contained in this game.
Game workflowYou can also turn on the spacebar as a spin button, and toggle on/off the intro splash screen. You can choose a bet level between 10p and £300 per spin, which is a bet range that’s suitable for most player types.
You need to hold down the spin button for a few seconds to open the autoplay menu, and you can choose between 5 and 100 autospins. To stop the autospins automatically when you win/lose a given amount, or when you trigger the bonus round, you need to visit the game settings again. This is a bit strange, as Evoplay could have easily included these options in the actual autoplay menu. Anyway, you’re now ready to join the female pirate captain in her battle against her archenemies, both dead and undead.

The 200 Spins Sea of Spins Experience
A new pirate themed slot with elaborate animations seemed like a hot ticket at first, but our 200 spins test run revealed a somewhat toothless game with no real charm once the novelty has worn off. It did not take very long for that to happen actually, and the animations became a bit annoying because the features they initiated seldom amounted to anything.
In good faith, we set our bet level to £1 per spin and loaded in 100 autospins to get started. We might have had an extreme case of “beginner’s unluck”, but calling this a medium volatile game doesn’t really feel right. We had a vast amount of dead spins in our session, and the base game provided only small wins up to 10x at best.
Most of the time we got only minute wins if anything, and the 3 random features did not seem very helpful at all. Especially the Imperial ship was useless, as we only ever got 1 sticky wild when it arrived and won nothing each time. Our favorite was the Ghost Ship, as this would emerge from the depth and a giant octopus would literally turn symbols into wilds.
WinThis helped a little bit at times, but we never landed any significant wins from any of the random features. After 200 spins we had not triggered the free spins bonus round a single time, even though the hit frequency is supposedly 1 in 128 spins. We actually had to go almost 200 spins “overtime” before the stubborn Battle Free Spins feature was finally triggered.
The first enemy that sailed in was the Imperial captain with his impressive vessel full of canons. The sticky wilds feature was as useless now as it was in the base game feature, and we got almost no wins from around the 3-4 sticky wilds we managed to rack up. We won the battle with ease though, and Samuel Soaring sailed in on his airship as our next enemy.
This time we lost the fight, and we only got a lousy 13x our stake from the whole bonus round, which is just plain ridiculous. All that waiting, all those long-winded animations, and it amounts to this. At least we now understand how it feels to be robbed by pirates, cause this game took us for almost £400 and we hardly think we’ll be back for a second serving.
Review Summary
The idea and the concept of Sea of Spins is good enough, but the execution has failed miserably. First of all, why is the graphics so poorly done. It looks like a bad computer game from the 90s or something. It’s also a bit strange that the female pirate is all alone on her ship. There is no crew of any kind, and the same goes for all the other enemy vessels. It just feels kind of half-baked. If you’re going to do such a game, why not do it properly?
The math model also seems out of whack to us. We played almost 400 spins and barely got the bonus round once. All the base game features might look somewhat cool (at least until you get tired of them), but very seldom do they lead to any significant wins. When also the bonus round fails to deliver, and the potential is not all that good in the first place, we don’t see much reason to choose Sea of Spins when there is an ocean of better pirate games out there.
Pros
- 3 base game features with elaborate 3D animations
- Free spins battle with up to 3 different ships
- Max win potential of 2,451x your stake
Cons
- Seems a lot more volatile than medium
- Stiff and charmless characters
- The visuals resemble a half-baked 90s computer game
If you appreciate Sea of Spins you should also try:
As you probably understand from the above conclusion, Sea of Spins didn’t really do it for us. The good news is that you’ll find plenty of other pirate themed games out there, and many of them are far better than the game at hand. We will give you some samples here, and you can read more about each game (and also play the free demo) by following the respective links.
Pirate Kingdom Megaways - is an action packed title from Iron Dog, and you’ll benefit from 2x multiplier wilds in the base game. Reels that contain 7 symbols will become sticky during the bonus round, and there is also a progressive multiplier that increases by +1 for each sticky reel you get. You can win up to 40,000x your stake on this highly volatile pirate game.
Pirates Charm - takes you on a high-seas journey with a wild bunch of buccaneers. Yggdrasil claims that this is one of their darkest games ever, and you’re definitely in for some stormy weather here. You’ll benefit from both respins and free spins in this game, as this title is brimming with action with lots of surprises up its ruffled sleeve.
Pirates Plenty The Sunken Treasure - comes with the standard 5 reels, but you can unlock a 6th reel by collecting treasure map symbols. This also unlocks more features in the game, and increases the max win potential. A monkey can remove low value symbols, and you will benefit from stacked multiplier wilds up to 5x. There is also a bonus round here, and you can win up to 5,000x your stake.

This is supposedly a medium volatile game, but it feels more like a high volatility game in our experience.

You trigger it by landing 3 scatters, and then you get to duke it out with 1 of 3 enemy vessels. If you win, you will continue with another enemy, and beating all 3 gives you a 2x or 3x multiplier.
