Ali Baba's Luck Review
It’s a well-established fact by now that the “book slot formula” is about as effective as Hollywood’s “Hero’s Journey blueprint” when it comes to churning out blockbuster games. However, just like with the Hollywood formula, there is no guarantee that a game that follows the book slot blueprint will actually hit home with players. The big challenge is to create an original twist that makes the game feel unique and fresh, even though it’s “the same game” underneath it all.
Ali Baba's Luck, from Red Tiger partner, Max Win Gaming, is nothing short of a lecture in how smoothly and seemingly effortlessly this can be done. Not to sound blasphemous over here, but the “problem” with most book slots is that the base game is kind of a tedious grind until you finally get the bonus round. Not so with Ali Baba's Luck slot. The volatility is still high, yes, and the max win potential is even a bit higher than most book slots, but here you’ll get plenty of excitement in the base game also.
Ali Baba's LuckThis is due to the genius twist of allowing symbols to expand also during the regular gameplay. In fact, you can get up to several expanding symbols following a multiple symbols win here, and this makes the game that much more entertaining and balanced. It all comes to a head in the bonus round, where the expanding symbols don’t reset between spins. You never know how many of the 9 symbols you will expand during the feature, and wins above 5,000x is possible in this very refreshing spinoff from the book slot tradition.

What are the bonus features?
Instead of reserving the expanding symbols feature for the bonus round only, it plays a very central role also in the base game in Ali Baba’s Luck. In fact, you can trigger expanding symbols after every single win here. All the symbols are found in a horizontal meter above the reels, and any symbol you win with will be highlighted up there as a golden symbol. This means that you can get more than one highlighted symbol at the same time, even on base game spins.
Any instances of the golden symbol (or symbols) on the next spin after a winning spin, will expand to cover the entire reel.
However, you need to land at least 3 of the same golden symbols on separate reels for this to happen. The good news is that you don’t need adjacent reels with expanded symbols to win. In fact, you’ll win the same amount if you land the golden symbol on reels 1, 3 and 5, as if you land it on reels 1, 2 and 3. The feature resets on the next spin in the base game.Free spins in Ali Baba's LuckThe treasure chest is the scatter symbol in this game, and the Free Spins feature is triggered whenever you land 3 scatters anywhere on the same spin. The free spins feature is called a “Lucky Round” in this game, and before the bonus round plays out you get to spin a wheel of fortune to see how many “dream spins” you get.
Dream Spins is just a fancy name for free spins really, and you can get between 4 and 16 spins from this Lucky Wheel. If you trigger the feature with 4 or 5 scatters however, 4 or 8 free spins will be added to whatever you get from the bonus wheel. The big difference in the bonus round, as compared to the base game, is that special golden symbols will no longer reset.
This means that you can, in theory at least, get all the symbols highlighted as golden expanding symbols at the same time. If you have more than one golden expanding symbol active and land several of them on the same spin, they will take turns expanding to give you full reel payouts. This is also true in the base game by the way, but it will happen more often in the bonus round.
You can retrigger the free spins round by landing 3+ scatters during the feature. How to play
The game interface is slick and modern as usual from this developer, and it does not occupy too much prime real estate on the screen. If you’ve played some book series slots before, you will get into the gameplay quite easily. However, we’ll still walk you through everything you should know about playing Ali Baba's Luck slot here. Beginners should probably read this through, while more experienced players can skim through it, or skip to the next section.
Your bankroll balance is shown up in the left-hand side corner, and you can choose your bet level between 20p and £500 per spin via the “stake” button down to the left.
Ali Baba's LuckUp in the right-hand side corner you can toggle on/off the game sound. We had no urge to turn it off, as the background music sets the “1001 nights mood” perfectly, and the sound effects add solidity to the gameplay. The hamburger menu up in the right side corner opens up the paytable for you, and the first thing you’ll see is Ali Baba and Morgiana in a gold framed splash screen.
You can scroll through the brief description of the different features to get to the actual paytable, and here you can check out all the symbol values.
The paytable is static, and shows the line bet win for each symbol combination. Therefore, you need to divide each of the values with 10 (i.e. the number of paylines) to find out how much you’ll win per total stake. Ali Baba himself is the most valuable symbol, and pays 500x for 5 on a payline. You can turn on the Turbo Spins feature right next to the spin button, via the double arrow turbo button. We really recommend this option, as the pace of the game becomes that much more enjoyable. You can also set up the autoplay feature with between 10 and 100 autospins, and you need to set a loss limit between £20 and £20,000 before you hit start. Of course, you can also spin the reels manually, if you feel like a mouse finger workout.

If that’s the case, our best advice is to try the demo version of this game first, before you risk anything from your own pocket. The 200 Spins Ali Baba's Luck Experience
At first we thought Ali Baba's Luck would be just another half-interesting book slot spinoff, but it didn’t take more than 2 spins before this game grabbed us by the eyeballs and sucked us into an exhilarating thrillride we did not expect at all. Talk about being pleasantly surprised, and this clearly demonstrates that there are still more nurturing juices to be squeezed from this tried and tested formula.
On our unofficial scale of “oddly satisfying” gameplay (where 10 means that you don’t care if you win or lose, and 1 means you’re in danger of getting an ulcer), Ali Baba’s Luck is a solid 8 with the turbo spins on. Everything flows smoothly, and there are no annoying break ups in the gameplay. It was a pure pleasure to play out our 200 spins test run, and we felt sad it was over so quickly.
On our very second spin, we managed to fill the whole screen with nothing but Q symbols, and this set us off to a great start with a 100x win added to our bankroll. The expanding symbols in the base game landed us wins between 5x and 10x on a regular basis all the way, and we also had a few bigger wins between 20x and 60x.
Ali Baba's LuckIt’s just extremely refreshing that you can enjoy this feature also in the base game, and it makes the game perfectly balanced. It also takes the edge of the high volatility, as you keep getting decent wins quite often here. We triggered the bonus round towards the end of our 200 spins session, and the Lucky Wheel gave us 8 Dream Spins.
We got the golden Q highlighted early on, and later the premium Ring symbol also, but we only won a total of 36.5x from the bonus round. Somewhat disappointing yes, but we definitely saw the potential in this feature, and we will be back for plenty more. As of right now, this is our favorite “book slot” of all time, and we think Red Tiger (and Max Win Gaming) has created a gamechanger with Ali Baba's Luck slot.
Review Summary
With so many book slot spinoffs out there, it’s hard to believe that nobody has come up with something like this before. The base game can sometimes feel a bit suffocating in most book slots, but with Ali Baba's Luck, Red Tiger has solved that issue with grace and charm by allowing symbols to expand also in the base game. The gameplay flows smoothly all the way, and every spin feels refreshing due to the ever-present potential for expanding symbols.
This sets the stage for a perfectly balanced gaming experience, and the potential of 5,362x is even higher than what you find on most book slots. Ali Baba's Luck deserves the attention of any fan of this popular series (and other players as well), as it’s one of the best and most original spinoffs to date. This certainly amputates the experience for high rollers and even upper mid level players, but this is also the only real drawback we see here.
Pros
- Up to several expanding symbols after base game wins
- Free spins where expanding symbols don’t reset
- High volatility and 5,362x max win potential
Cons
- Default RTP of 95.89 % (but beware of RTP ranges)

This is a very easy game to fall in love with, and we would rather recommend that you play the game at hand than anything else right now, to be totally honest. Since we “have to” recommend you some other similar games in this section of the review, we’ve done our best to handpick games you’ll most likely enjoy if you liked Ali Baba’s Luck slot. Follow the links to read more about each game, or try the free demo version.
Book of Dead - is perhaps not the most surprising recommendation, but we still feel that the game that started the whole trend needs to be on the list. It’s not one of the most popular games out there for no reason, and players keep returning to this one like it’s the holy grail. You’ll benefit from expanding symbols only in the bonus round here, and only 1 symbol will be chosen each time.
Jinns Moon - comes with 4 different fixed jackpots, and the biggest one can make you 2,000x your stake richer. You need to trigger the Fire Blaze Jackpot Respins feature to have a shot at the jackpots, and the game’s bonus round comes with a very exciting “mystery reels” feature. An interesting game with a nicely done arabian theme.
Legacy of Dead - is one of our personal favorites in the book slot series, as it comes with the possibility of turning all 9 symbols into expanding symbols in the bonus round. Still, you cannot get any expanding symbols in the base game, which the game at hand offers, but also here you will win with expanded symbols that are not necessarily adjacent on the reels.
