Curse of the Werewolf Megaways Review
The tale of man being transformed, usually against his will, into a wolf has been a persistent myth that’s still going strong in this modern day and age. There are therefore already plenty of werewolf slots out there, and Pragmatic has wisely decided to take a somewhat original approach with their Curse of the Werewolf Megaways. The title might sound serious enough, but the visuals and soundtrack soon reveals this as more of a horror/comedy, with neatly designed cartoon-style, caricature characters.
The 6x6 reel setup is set against a foggy, gothic village backdrop, and you will not find the usual Avalanche feature in this game. You will, however, benefit from a mystery symbols feature, as well as 2 randomly triggered spin modifiers in the base game. This is the 4th Megaways engine slot from Pragmatic, but they still haven’t warmed up enough to offer anything truly innovative to the genre. It’s really mostly about the bonus round here, and the volatility is brutally high with wins above 40,000x your stake as an ever-present possibility.
You will need a healthy dose of patience to appreciate this game. Although the base game features are somewhat helpful in breaking up the gameplay, they don’t usually pay all that much. The bonus round can go either way, as is usually the case, and we got the short end of the stick in our 200 spins test session. It’s all about transforming the 4 village characters into the high paying werewolf symbol here, and the sooner you can do that, the bigger your chances of significant wins. All in all, this is yet another solid Megaways title from Pragmatic, but we hope they will bring some real innovation to the table next time.

What are the bonus features?
There are plenty of features to cover here, as this game comes with a bit more than the regular megaways features. Pragmatic has chosen to drop the standard cascading reels feature in Curse of the Werewolf Megaways slot, which is an interesting twist, and we’ll take a closer look at everything you can look forward to here.
On a regular basis, you will land a bunch of howling werewolf symbols on the reels, and these are mystery symbols that turn into a randomly chosen regular symbol. This can help you land winning combos when you least expect it, and the mystery symbol can land on all 6 reels.
You will also benefit from 2 randomly triggered spin modifiers in the base game.
The Super Spin feature will land you stacks of high value symbols, while the Guaranteed Win feature will give you a bigger win across multiple paylines.Free spins in Curse of the Werewolf MegawaysThe free spins bonus round is triggered when you land at least 3 bonus symbols anywhere on the screen. You can land between 3 to 6 bonus symbols, and this will give you 8, 10, 12 or 15 free spins, respectively. You can also add extra spins to your tally during the feature, and 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 bonus symbols will give you 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 extra free spins.
You will usually land quite a lot of the attacking golden werewolf symbol during the bonus round, and it functions as a semi-wild that can step in for all regular symbols except the high value werewolf symbol. Each village character symbol comes with 5 lives, and the golden werewolf attack will remove between 1 and 5 lives from a character whenever it lands.
When all 5 lives are removed from a villager, he or she will turn into a werewolf. This means that this symbol will now be replaced by the highest value werewolf symbol for the duration of the free spins round. You will also get 1 extra free spin whenever you manage to convert people into werewolves. The progress can be seen on the meters to the left-hand side of the reels.

People familiar with Pragmatic Play games will immediately recognize the minimalistic and modern game interface, and everything you need is found below the reels here. We will take a closer look at all the essentials you should know about to play this game, but keep in mind that this particular section of the review is mostly for newbies and less experienced players.
You can start by checking out the game settings via the small hamburger menu icon down to the left. Here you can turn on the Quick Spin option to increase the pace of the gameplay. This is a good idea in this game, especially if you are in a bit of a hurry to get to the bonus round. You can also turn on Battery Saver mode, which is good if you play on your mobile or tablet and are unable to charge for a while.
You can turn off/on the background music and the game FX sounds separately here, which is always a good thing.
In addition, you can turn off the intro screen to save time when you load in the game next time. The volume can also be adjusted seamlessly in-game, which is something we miss from many other developers.Curse of the Werewolf MegawaysThe big “i” icon takes you into the paytable, where you can check out the respective symbol values already on the first slide. The paytable is dynamic, per usual from Pragmatic, and you will see that the values shift in accordance with your chosen bet level. The premium symbols are worth between 10x and 1.5x for 6 on a payline, and there are 4 village character symbols, as well as the high value werewolf himself.
You win by landing at least 3 symbols on adjacent reels from left to right, and you can use the arrows to scroll through the paytable to read about the different bonus features. You’ll find the game rules towards the end, and you can now choose your bet level between 10p and £100 per spin. You can then set up the autoplay feature with between 10 and 100 autospins, or you can spin the reels manually.

The 200 Spins Curse of the Werewolf Megaways Experience
The caricature style theme made this game stick out from a lot of other wolf/werewolf slots, and the massive potential immediately caught our attention. Pragmatic has made some successful and strong megaways titles already, and we were certainly eager to see what they had come up with this time.
The brutality of the volatility became apparent from the get-go, as we kept landing mostly dead spins or smaller wins. The mystery symbol feature triggers quite often, it seems, and it dished out some okay wins once in a while. Nothing out of the ordinary though, but between 2x and 10x is something you might expect from this feature most of the time.
With the turbo switched on, this game comes at you with a decent pace. However, on our unofficial “oddly satisfying” gameplay scale between 1 and 10, we would chalk this one up as a solid 6. Nothing about the spins are particularly pleasing, but at least there is no annoying hiccups and delays to slow you down.
Towards the middle of our session we somehow managed to trigger the bonus round, but we landed only the minimum of 3 scatters. This gave us 8 free spins, and we landed the Werewolf Strike symbol on more or less every spin. Towards the middle of the session we had already transformed the 2 lowest value character symbols into werewolves, but so far we’d only racked up a lousy $30 in winnings.
On the very next spin we had a decent 30x win, something the game made a big deal out of. With 2 spins left we managed to transform the lady (second highest value character) into a werewolf, and this also gave us a sorely needed extra spin. On the very last spin we landed 2 scatters, which gave us 2 more spins, but we got no more “big wins” from them. In the end, we got away with only 38.5x our stake in total, which was a bit disappointing to say the least.
Review Summary
Most wolf and werewolf games out there tend to have a more serious approach to their subject matter. Pragmatic Play, however, has succeeded in creating a more humoristic atmosphere in Curse of the Werewolf Megaways slot. The characters and the wolf himself are all cartoon-style caricatures, and the soundtrack is a parody on “spooky” horror movie music. So far, so good, but the game lacks true originality and innovation.
The mystery symbol feature is somewhat helpful, but it’s almost a default feature on most megaways titles. The lack of cascading reels is actually kind of refreshing, and it certainly saves you time in the race towards the all-important bonus round. The 2 reel modifiers can also be helpful of course, but the bonus round is where you’ll most likely come anywhere close to the massive 40,000+ max win potential.
Pros
- 2 random reel modifiers
- Mystery symbols feature
- Free spins with symbol transformation
- High volatility and 40,976x max win potential
Cons
- Adds nothing really new to the megaways genre

The Wolf's Bane - comes with a classic, spooky werewolf theme, perfectly designed by NetEnt. The nightly creature is terrorizing a small village, and you will benefit from a pick’em bonus game and a free spins round with 4 different wild features. Up to 60 free spins can be won here, and this is a low to medium variance title with a 500x max win potential.

Vampires vs Wolves - is an interesting mix of themes also from Pragmatic Play, and it comes with an all-important free spins bonus round. The base game might not offer much in terms of features, but you can choose between a Vampire and a Werewolf option in the bonus round. A somewhat original title, and well worth checking out for fans of the horror genre.
